In 1998, the first IZA European Summer School in Labor Economics took place from September 7 – 13 at the conference center of the German Post Office in Buch at the lake of Ammersee (near Munich), Bavaria/Germany.
The objective of this yearly summer school is to bring together a large number of Ph.D. students and senior lecturers to study new areas in labor economics, to give the Ph.D. students the possibility to present their papers, and to discuss their own research ideas with established researchers in a relaxed and open atmosphere.
The two lectures of the 1 IZA summer school were held by Francis Kramarz (CREST/INSEE, Paris) and Frank Windmeijer (Institute for Fiscal Studies, IFS, London). A short description of these lectures is given Section 2 of this report. The largest share of IZA Summer School participants were Ph.D. students. They covered nearly every European country, so that the environment was very international. Depending on the status of their research, most of the Ph.D. students gave a talk about their research output.
The subjects of their talks covered a wide range of labor market issues which are summarized in Section 3. Section 4 describes the excursion to the Ettal Monastery and the Castle Linderhof. Section 5 of this report includes the program of the 1 IZA summer school and the final Section Section 6 is a list of the participants.
