Modern labor markets are in a constant state of flux as they adjust to the challenge of effectively employing workers in this era of globalization. The purpose of this meeting was to contribute to our understanding of how labor market institutions adjust to the ever changing demand for labor services. We brought together a number of distinguished labor economists to explore this question, and to propose ways to improve labor market performance.

Questions that were addressed include how temporary help agencies enhance labor market performance, the impact that performance pay has upon wage and income inequality, and labor market performance, and the effect of workplace practices upon firm performance. An unusual aspect of the meeting was that it allowed an exchange between researchers that use a number different types of data to study these issues, including large-scale panel data, data from laboratory experiments, and firm-level field data. By bringing together corroborating evidence from a number of difference sources, and encouraging interaction between workshop participants, the topic week strongly enriched our understanding of these important issues.
