Fischer Georg Fischer is Director for "Analysis, Evaluation, External Relations" in the Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion at the European Commission in Brussels. His responsibilities include employment and social analysis, evaluation of major employment and social EU programmes as well as the social dimension of external EU relations and of EU enlargement. He is a member of the Impact Assessment Board of the European Commission.

From 2009 to 2010 he was Director for "Social Protection and Integration" at the same Directorate General. From 2003 to 2010 he was in charge of the unit "Social Protection, Social Services" and from 1996 to 2003, he was responsible for Employment Policy and Analysis. In this role, Mr Fischer contributed to developing the European Employment Strategy.

Prior to this he was at the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development, working on transition economies contributing to the G-7 Study of the Soviet Economy and leading the first OECD labour market reviews in transition economies.
In the 1980ies and parts of the 1990ies he worked in different functions in the Austrian Ministry of Labour and in the cabinet of the Minister of Finance. He contributed to the development of active labour market policies, dealt with the reform of social protection systems, of public employment and services and long-term trends of public finances. In the mid 1990ies following the reform of the Austrian Public Employment Services (AMS) he was a member of the AMS Administrative Board.

1989/1990 he was a visiting research fellow in the Social Science Centre Berlin and in 1995/1996 an advisor to the Economic Cooperation Foundation in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is a policy fellow of the IZA in Bonn.

Georg Fischer is an economist and studied at the University of Vienna in Austria (Master Degree) as well as at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.

He has been an IZA Policy Fellow since 2005.
