Abstract:

The Internet is a commonly used medium for researchers. Their publications
and data are made available online and they provide their citations with
hyperlinks. Although very effective, the Internet is not a very durable
medium. Persistent identifiers allow us to build a durable research
infrastructure and make it available via current Internet technology. Many
organizations acknowledge the need for these identifiers and have
implemented them or are considering implementing them. Unfortunately this is
not a straightforward thing to do: next to some technical choices there are
the organizational issues that are critical when it comes to long-term
persistence. The presentation will discuss these and show how we deal with
them for building up an academic infrastructure in the Netherlands and in
Europe. It will also show current and future issues that still need to be
solved.
