Abstract:

Several waves of the IAB establishment panel are used to provide information on the structure of hires in Germany 2002-2004, distinguishing between persons aged 50 years and older and younger individuals. According to these sources, 15 percents of all establishments are not willing to hire older employees and for further 31 percents certain conditions must be fulfilled. Taking the last vacancy filled as a point of reference only 14 percents of the establishments reported that they have hired persons of aged 50 or more. Reflecting current preoccupations, our demand analysis seeks also to accommodate the impact of further training, technology, workplace characteristics and industrial relations. The results of both descriptive and multivariate analyses are presented.
