Abstract:

We study long-run causal effects of attending a school with more advanced peers and a more academic teaching curriculum on wages, occupational choice, unemployment, and highest educational degree obtained. Based on a regression discontinuity design that assigns students to different types of school based on their birth date due to a school entry age rule, we find these effects to be very small and mostly not significantly different from zero. These results are striking because the case we study involves larger differences in peer quality and teaching curriculum between schools than in most other previous studies. Interpreting our estimates in the light of a model of track choice, our findings suggest that giving people a second chance in their educational life can make up for several years of education with a less challenging peer group and a less challenging teaching curriculum.
