Aim of the Conference

Social protection systems have always played a significant role in responding to the needs of households in financial difficulties, a role that has been underlined during the recent Great Recession in many countries around the world. Patterns of transitions into and out of benefit receipt are important measures of the effectiveness of social protection systems.
The aim of this conference is to bring together new research on the dynamics of social assistance, minimum income and related out-of-work benefits to shed light on the movements into and out of safety nets, the individual or family characteristics associated with these movements, and the extent of state dependence or ‘scarring’.
Contributions dealing with specific aspects of benefit receipt dynamics are also welcome. This includes, but is not limited to, the duration in or out of benefits, the events associated with the beginning or ending of benefits spells, the destination of benefit-leavers, repetition of receipt, or the changes over time in flows into and out of benefit receipt.

Paper Submission

Those who wish to participate are invited to submit a complete paper using the online application form. The deadline for submission is January 31, 2013. Decisions of acceptance will be announced no later than February 15, 2013. Complete papers will be due April 21, 2013.
Research in Labor Economics (RLE) will publish a special volume containing papers from the conference subject to the standard peer-review process. The deadline for submitting final papers for the volume is June 21, 2013.

Economy class air travel costs for presenters of papers that have been accepted will be reimbursed according to the IZA reimbursement guidelines. Accommodation and meals at the conference venue will also be provided.
