About the Workshop

In the last decades, the labor economics literature has seen a growing interest in the role of cognitive and non-cognitive skills and their interplay in labor market and behavioral outcomes. For developed economies, the literature has established that cognitive and non-cognitive skills are equally important for many dimensions of social performance. More recently, the focus has broadened to include less developed countries and a wider spectrum of labor market outcomes, including informal employment.
The workshop, organized by IZA, OECD and the World Bank will focus on the role of cognitive and non-cognitive skills in the labor markets of developing, emerging, and developed economies. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
  • Mismatch of cognitive and non-cognitive skills in the labor market;
  • Cognitive and non-cognitive skills and labor productivity;
  • The evolution of cognitive and non-cognitive skills over the life cycle;
  • Policy interventions and the formation of cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

    Paper Submission

    Proposals should be submitted through the online application form. The deadline for submission of complete papers or extended abstracts is June 15, 2014. Complete papers are strongly preferred.
    In order to disseminate the research presented in the workshop, the editors of the IZA Journal of Labor & Development and the IZA Journal of Labor Economics have decided to devote forthcoming articles to the topics listed above. We therefore encourage workshop participants to submit their papers for possible publication in either journal. This can be done by placing a tick in the electronic submission form.
    Authors of submitted papers or extended abstracts will be notified no later than July 15, 2014 as to whether their paper has been accepted for the workshop. Complete papers will be due on September 15, 2014. Manuscripts submitted to either of the journals will undergo the standard editorial procedures. The editors’ decisions will be announced after the workshop.

    Travel and Accommodation

    Economy class air travel costs for presenters of papers that have been accepted will be reimbursed according to the IZA reimbursement guidelines. Accommodation and meals at the workshop venue will be also provided.
